Flesh Consumed pour l'album "Fermented Slaughter / Inhuman Butchery"
Interview
Flesh Consumed pour l'album "Fermented Slaughter / Inhuman Butchery" Entretien avec Corey Athos (guitare / chant) (2007)
1) Hi! Nicolas from the french webzine Thrashocore writing. Could you please first introduce Flesh Consumed to our readers: where do you come from? When did the band start?
What's up Nicolas, thanks for the interview.
Flesh Consumed is a Brutal Death Metal band based out of Santa Cruz and South Bay California. The band started back in 2003.
2) There has been a few line-up changes recently. Do you feel that you have the right one now?
Basically, I dropped everyone in the band after the Inhuman Butchery EP. I then picked up Alex Colon on drums and Phil Perez on bass and we wrote and recorded the Fermented Slaughter EP. In November, we got Lenard Atalig on second guitar. The new line-up has a great chemistry and I feel that it will last for a long time.
3) What are your major musical influences?
I am influenced by all the bands I listen to. If I have to narrow it down to just one, it would have to be Immolation even though we sound nothing like them. Alex's father is a professional jazz percussionist and I played bass in jazz band for a few years so that's an influence as well.
4) Your music is brutal but yet still catchy, how do you manage to get the right combination? How would you describe your music?
We try to cut out everything that's filling in space or doesn't serve a purpose. Structure is a vital part of our misc. I would describe our music as a blend of groove, technical, drops, raw blast, etc.
5) It seems that there's a renewal of the brutal death metal scene since a couple years. How do you feel about that? What are the new brutal death metal bands you listen to?
The scene is going great. There are so many fresh bands emerging, it's amazing. Some of my favorites are Defeated Sanity, Despondency, Odious Mortem, Guttural Secrete, Infected Malignity, to name a few.
6) “Fermented slaughter/Inhuman butchery” contains your first EP and 3 new tracks, why did you decide to put this out instead of writing 4-5 more songs in order to release a full length album?
With the line-up change, we wanted to record a second Ep (“Fermented Slaughter”), since the style was changing a little. Alex was going to jail so we didn't have time to record a full length album. I asked Barrett to release the “Fermented Slaughter” Ep and he suggested that we release both Eps as a double Ep.
7) What were the reactions you got when the first EP came out?
There was an amazing reaction from the “Inhuman Butchery” EP. It got the labels interested in us so it definitely did the trick.
8) I have read that an album was planned for this spring, can you tell us a little bit about the album? Will there be any differences with the Eps?
The new album is entitled “Mutilate, Eviscerate, Decapitate”. The material is much more matured and we have a second guitarist (Lenard) on this one, so there is a lot of dual guitar work, harmonies, and solos. We definitely push each other to write more technical riffs.
9) Is there a tour planned in the early months after the album is out? Do you think you'll come to Europe soon?
Nothing set in stone yet, but you can expect us to tour in promotion of the new album and hopefully we can make it out to Europe. We'll at least try to hit some festivals over there.
10) As 99% of the brutal death metal bands, your lyrics are about mutilation, torture, suffering...where does this inspiration come from? Don't you think it's a little bit “easy lyrics”?
The inspiration comes from everywhere. From horror movies, to scientific studies and data, to our beliefs. Whenever it seems to be “easy” we spice it up a little bit or take it into another realm concept. We definitely put a lot of thought and pride into our lyrics.
11) What are you occupations? (I guess you have jobs outside the band...)
I'm a pharmacy technician; Alex (drums) does labor jobs; Phil (bass) is a seed enhancement technician; and Lenard (guitar) is a manager at Workworld.
12) What's your current playlist? Any suggestion for our readers?
Lately, I've been listening to a lot of Immolation, Defeated Sanity, Disavowed, Despondency, Odious Mortem, Gorguts, Gorgasm, etc.
13) Do you know french metal bands?
There are a bunch of sick French bands coming up. Two of my favorites are Kronos and Gorod.
14) Thanx for answering my questions. Anything special to say to the French metalheads?
France is sick as hell! Thanks for the present (Statue of Liberty), and keep supporting Flesh Consumed!
