Varathron pour l'album "Crowsreign"

Hi! Could you present the band for those who don’t know you yet?

Hail my friend! Well, we are Varathron from 1988! Now our new line-up is:
Me (STEFAN) - vocals,
Achilleas – guitars and bass,
Bill – synths,
Harris - Drums.


The History of Varathron started a long time ago, in 1989. How has the band evolved musically during all theses years ?

We start like a first idea in 1988, our first demo coming in 1989. So, Varathron was a pure black metal band with a strange “sound”! Through the years, our style remains the same, the band have some more elements with an “invasion” of synths who give us an apocryphal atmosphere. Our “frontiers” are open but we don’t like any stuff who “destroy” our style as we created from the beginning! Varathron is a cult band and we have a great respect to our friends/fans who support our music! Rules!!!!


Except the re-release of your first album “His Majesty At The Swamp” in 2001, your last album was released in 1998. The period during 1998 and 2003 was a period of doubt for the band or a productive period (or both)?

From 1998 until now we have: a re-release of our first album “His Majesty At The Swamp”, the release of Ordealis Records “Varathron 1989/1991” with our two demos and some old live tracks on vinyl format, in 2004 and the last month of 2004, our new album “Crowsreign”.

Well, that period was a “bad” moment for our history. After the release of “The Lament Of Gods”, the synth-man gone to obligatory army service. The guitarist left the band for personal reasons and the drummer was so confused and disappointed with the situation (in the band I was only me and him!!!) and left the band!!!! So I stay alone as on the past! I don’t give up, Varathron is my band who give all myself, who sacrifice a lot of personal opportunities! So, I found a new guitarist with a lot of “hungry” for work and a drummer who kills! Then our synth-man return to us ans now we’re so strong!!! With a full energy and passion for work, we had completed our new album and now is out!!! That’s our “frozen” age from 1998 until now!!!!!!!!!


Let’s speak about the present. “Crowsreign” is the first Varathron’s album I’ve listen so far and I was surprised by your style which is quite original and gather a lot of styles (not necessary in metal music). Who is responsible for this? How could you define it?

Well the tracks of this album was written from 1999! In 2004, we worked on these tracks, we cut some riffs and we put some others. So the sound is total Varathron!!! We have some parts who we mix sounds from our ancient Greek music, from classic music and music for soundtracks on thriller movies!!! Are songs who wrote the old guitarist and synth-man before 6 years, with a “fresh” face!!!! I think it’s not so different and strange than our own style. That’s my poor opinion!


Are you or were you influenced by any bands?

I think our influences come from the past. Bands like Hellhammer, Bathory, early-Sarcofago, Venom were our musical influences who give us the “fire” to playing metal music for ever!!!! Salute them!!!!


The lyrics seem to have an important place in your music. Could you explain the concept of “Crowsreign”?

Well, the dominion of crow is coming! An album dedicated to our utter dark lord who reigns the human race! Well, the first song called “There is no God”, is a story for a human soul who is looking for salvation on a world without god. Maybe a “report” to the old anarchy philosophers who the first rule was the non-existence of god!
The song “The Grim Palace” talks for a mystery palace who into the underground rooms made so unspeakable sacrifices and masses!
The song “A Vision Of A Nameless Soul”, is a trip for a soul beyond the grave, beyond the dominion of sleep!
The song “The Sign of Eternal Curse”, is a myth from the east who talks for a secret dragon who gives to immortality!!
The song “Darkness Falling”, talks for the emotions who fell when night comes!!
The song “The Creation Of Satan” talks for a demon who comes to earth and rape any “innocent” souls!!!
The song “The King Of Asine”, is a great epic song, a poem of a great Greek poet George Seferis who wrote it in 1938! It talks about a king who comes from a war to destroy!!!
The song “Angel Of Revenge” talks about the dark master, the fallen angel who comes!!!
The other songs are instrumentals.


Any gigs planned?

Well we start some gigs on spring and we will play on some places in Europe!! The Beast is… ALIVE!!!
