Armament : Etre Thrash en Inde

Interview

Armament : Etre Thrash en Inde Entretien avec Conquest, Death, War, Famine (2016)
Can you introduce yourself?

Armament : Hey guys. Greetings from India. We are Armament a four piece outfit and we play Thrash Metal. Like it real Faaaast..especially after a few rounds of… You know what.

Can you tell us the band's story and how you became musician ?

Conquest : Well.. music started at different ages for us individually, even when when it comes to Metal. And along with the huge differences in the music and the cultural heritage it is a pleasant knock to find a few( quite a few in fact) in the crowd who feel different. Who feels like saying something bout it..and saying this in the musical point of view. The band was formed in the winter of November 2011 with a few drunken bastards deciding that they have had it with the shit that was going on around. All we wanted to do was have some mental time of our own with something that connected us, which was Heavy Metal thankfully. Ha ha . Since the inception we have had a number of changes in the lineup which is of course like Drill for any band out there. Luckily with these changes we have been able to add an extra dimension to the band’s output everytime.

Why did you choose to play Metal?

Death : Its simply the music and the message it brings along with it basically. It is a very transparent form of music. One needs to experience shit in order to connect with the ideologies related to metal.

Are you mainly a live or a studio band?

Conquest : Well the band came out of its hiding for the first time through a live gig at Ritual Ascension Fest back in our hometown , Kolkata, and since then we have had one EP launched back in august last year, but performing live in front of a bunch of eccentric metalheads is what really drives us to exist.

What are your band Metal highlights?

War : During the span of the last 4 and a half years every show where we have played has been memoriable in some sort of way. The first will always remain special and ofcourse 2014, Bangalore Open Air where we got to play alongside the German Thrash Legend Destruction and Rotting Christ from Greece. Also last year the band’s first studio recorded materials were launched in form of an EP named First Strike.

What is the first Metal record you bought?

War: Maiden Early Years.. a compilation with Paul DiAnno on vocals. Found it on the Sale Bin of a music store which unfortunately got shut down a few years later.

What are your most important influences?

Conquest : Its hard to choose from a handfull of bands really when we talk about influences but Heavy Metal is what drove us into all this to begin with, bands like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motorhead. When it comes to Armament and Thrash Metal, the German and the Brazillian styles are what influenced the band the most to write our songs the way it is. Bands like Sodom, Destruction, Sarcofago, Sepultura and even Bathory from Sweden have put a huge impact on the band as musicians.

What do you love the most in your Metal style?

Famine: Musically speaking its the energy and the vibe it brings alongside it. In other words freedom of speech to a vast level.

Is it easy to be a Metal band in your country?

War : Although it has been several years that this genre has existed in our country we would still like to say that Metal is at a very early stage when it comes to the majority of the crowd understanding the real essence of the music. Everwhere young bands face obstacles during their early days and India is no exception. But unfortunately the commercial influence is such that even an established band might not think about making music as a profession here. That is the bitter truth indeed but at the same time i guess the beauty of metal lies in the struggle as well.

Can you describe your country's Metal stage?

Death : As we said being a metal band and to survive good, has always been a stiff task but still there has been a underground scene from back in the days, and exactly how it should be at times. Now the bands have more oppurtunities to express themselves through social media and the number of shows happening all over the country every year as well as we get to release there stuff through various record labels and distributorships. The crowd has grown with time and that is always a positive hope for the music and its future.

Are your band close from other Metal bands in your country? Which ones?

War : A number of bands came up at the same time back when we started and although some of them seize to exist unfortunately. In the local scene there are bands like Deadbolt as well a number of upcoming bands around the block are pretty cool. Also the guys from Kryptos are one of the fun guys to hang around with. They have been a major influence when it comes to professionalism. Also Primitive from Mumbai, beast of a band and great guys indeed. Gotta play alongside them on our EP launch.

What's the most difficult for a Metal band in your country?

Famine : I would say its the tempermant. It is surely hell not easy to reach the top of the charts when it comes to quality so you’ll find a handfull of bands killing it around for 10-15 years, and they are right there at the top.

Why is it important for your band to be recognized in other country than yours?

Death : It is not the importance of being recognized in other countries, but it surely is heart-warming to see the music reach beyond, especially when people from your own country are the ones takin it out there in the first place. Importance lies in making people more aware of the local scene.

In which country would you like to play live?

Conquest : Anywhere where the crowd can create a monster of a circle pit i guess.. ha ha \m/

Anything to Add?

War : Life is fuckin not easy at all but as long as we keep true to ourselves and have balls of steel, dreams are bound to take shape. I think we would all agree that this is where the music comes into play for us as metalheads. « If you want something..just speak it out ».. Thats the order of the day. It was a great round, thanks and cheers guys. Load your weapons and spread the hate. \m/
