1. First, could you please introduce your band to our readers, your main influences and the style which could best define your music ?
First of all, thanx for having us in your webzine; it’s very important for us. We are TerroriSTARS from Madrid, Spain; five sick motherfuckers from what people call the north of Africa (or the south of Europe); Ahres (vocals), Santos (guitar), Putas (bass) and ‘Storm (drums) and last but not least, me, Herrero (guitar)!!!!! We have been together since 2002 and last year we released our first record, “Satanistars”. It was just released in Spain, but Underclass guys made us a proposal we couldn’t refused and firmly show us they believe in our music. Now I see myself writing an interview for France in front of my computer. It’s like the dream of rock’n’roll came true.
We called our music to be metal, but I guess it fits more under “neo brutal” or “thug metal”. It’s like metal but with a main influence of death, black or brutal plus industrial or hardcore. It’s like old metal done the new way. You can hear it all in our debut album “Satanistars”. We recorded it in Spain with Spanish top producer Bigsimon (Sôber, Dark Moor) and then mixed it with metal master Fredrik Nordström (In Flames, Arch Enemy, Dimmu Borgir, …) and mastered it with our friend, Mika Jussila (Nightwish, Children Of Bodom). Without a doubt we are the most international Spanish band so far (well, if the Baron Rojo and Heroes del Silencio guys give us permission); it took almost our lifes, our money and a very hard work to have this project done; hope you all like it.
Also, as an exclusive, I can tell you we are thinking of changing our name to Hostile really soon (maybe after this tour, after the summer….) due to problems with Spanish law. It is illegal to be called “TerroriSTARS” in a country with such a problem like Terrorism. We were forced to cancel some shows lately and an organization called “Association of Terrorism victims” sent some letters to newspapers here. We thought of it after 11 of March, but now we see it more clear.
2. What can we expect from your new album compared to the previous ones?
Expect the unexpectable!!!!!! Before we recorded “Satanistars” we only had a 5 track demo and a Rammstein cover done, so new album would be a collection of what happened to the band in one year and a half plus how we grew up as musicians. It’s difficult to talk about a new album when you just have this on the shelves. But I can promise that if you liked “Satanistars” you will like the new album whenever it comes out, and that having an album like “Satanistars” would be necessary to understand the progression; the force of the guitars, the voice, our grinding drums… everything is alredy there and will be pushed one step farther!!! Always evolving, you know.
3. How does the writing process goes?
It is very democratic. It’s an essential part of being a musician and as soon as we left studio, we started making songs. We begin with some guitar riffs as our music is guitar-driven; then we add the bass and drums; voices come last. We are kind of work-alholic; for example, they called us for a Motorhead tribute and we did the song in one day (we rehearse every day of the week but weekends!!!). We try to achive a more personal sound with the new songs… Stay tuned!!!!!!!
4. Is there a tour planed to promote your new album?
We are actually planning a tour for September/October. We spent last year touring in Spain (we played almost every weekend, including festivals, mid-capacity venues and big arenas) but we think it is time to tour abroad, and specially in France. We love to be on stage, to play in front of people (not care if it’s two or three or thousands). We have no limits and we will play in wherever they want us to be. We have a first approach on the 19th of June, along with Avulsed (our Spanish friends), Coprofago and Dark Age. It will take place at the Loco in Paris. I know everybody will say “come and see us” but I can promise it will be a show you won’t forget!!!!!!!!!!
5. What do you do for a living apart from the band?
We have several and sometimes shitty jobs. Santos (guitar) works in a guitar shop but he keeps studying to be sound technician; he also records bands in his personal studio. Putas (bass) works with computers, Ahres (singer) repairing and mounting heavy machinery; our drummer in a music distribution company and I do work building houses. Music, at least now, won’t support your expenses, so if you can get some bucks with a job….
6. What is the best (and the worst) memory you have from your musician’s life?
The best memory is when you see your record both in stores and magazines/webzines. It’s such an impact… It’s like your dream came true… I can also mention when we took part of the Festimad. Festimad is the most important alternative/metal festival in Spain; we were forced to play by 17h, because after that time only foreign bands were scheduled, so we came down to the stage, and man, you wouldn’t have believed it; it was fucking full!!!! It was like eight thousand or more people waiting to see us, shouting our name….. It was a shocking experience!!!
The worst memory is when we had to cancel a show in Lille (France) two months ago. We were forced to cancel it due to our ex-singer depart. He had some other ideas on mind; related to money, fame,… that had nothing to do with the idea we have. We feel we are the same people that started as friends and end up as friends, not co-workers or means to get money. We felt very sorry, it was like a big hit for us, and what it is more important, we failed some friends of us (people from Xtraks.com) and our fans. We are not Metallica, who can blame their fans (remember Napster?) and still have a smile on the face; we are persons.
7. Do you know the French metal scene? What do you think of it?
We LOVE IT. It’s not a made up sentence; in Spain there are no distribution of any French bands so we had to download all the albums; we started visiting our company site, Underclass, then continued to some webzines, and found outstanding combos like Gojira, Eths (really cool!), Dagoba, Scarve, Anorexia Nervosa, Eyeless, L’esprit du clan, Loudblast, Zubrowska,… and even Pleymo (whose first drummer lives in Madrid). If these bands have the guts to sing in french, they really deserve you listen to them.
8. The same question goes for the metal scene as a whole. How do you think it will evolve in the few years, and how would you like it to evolve?
That’s a difficult question… I wait there will be more extreme bands, and of course you have bands like us, Chimaira, Killswitch Engage,… that are putting out brutal material; but just to mention something, most of the more brillant material is from Europe, not USA, that’s something to be proud of. There are many bands as well going back to their roots, like “hey, our last album was an experiment” In Flames, Soilwork,….
Also, maybe metal begins to sound like Mastodon or epic metalcore bands mixing stuff from Slayer, At The Gates,… Well, something might be true; Slayer will sound like Slayer.
9. If you could organise your own metal festival, whose bands would be invited?
This is a good question; but it might not sound strange if I say it would be like the Fury Fest . We have no similar festival in Spain; there are lots of festivals here but none that would bring Slayer, Neurosis, Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad, Gojira, Behemoth, Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Dying Fetus, Deicide (playing more than 20 minutes, please), Converge, Dark Funeral, In Flames, Zyklon, Cephalic Carnage, Marduk, Hate Eternal, Scarve, Brujeria… almost the same year… We would also bring Spanish bands like Hamlet, Soziedad Alkoholika, Second Silence, Xkrude, and Wormed.
10. What are you listening to these days? Any good metal / non metal albums to recommand?
We keep listening to many things but I guess Strapping Young Lad’s new anthem, “Alien”, or Meshuggah ”Catch 33” are the ones we listen to in our rehearsal space. My personal favourites: Behemoth ”Demigod”, Cephalic Carnage “Anomalies” and Nostromo “Ecce Lex”
11. If you could change something in this fucked up world, really anything you want, what would you choose?
Well, there are so many fucked things everywhere that we should change the world!!! Changing just one wouldn’t mean a thing but if we have to choose, let’s choose the church. I mean church’s inquisition mentality…
12. This interview is made for a French webzine (http://www.thrashocore.com). Any good / bad comments to make about this (be careful :p) ?
We did not know the webzine before but we visited it and find it very cool (althought it is white!!! Man, black is the colour for metal!!!!). We read the review and was it very helpful and quite surprising (I mean we sing most of the record in English and you seemed to understand some parts)! That’s a good point!
13. Last words are yours!
Thank you very fucking much! We hope to see you on tour (or at least in June in Paris) Keep it brutal!!!
